Meeting With National and Local Government in Kinshasa.
Patrice presented the objectives of the Foundation in a nationally televised interview with journalist Mrs. Mamina on TV Tropicana of the DRC.
Patrice also met with Puati Ngomathe Minister of Health and Social Affairs for the Province of Kinshasa and Mrs. Thérèsa Olenga Kalonda the Minister of Education for the Province of Kinshasa. They discussed ways that the Mwamba Family Foundation can help with the immense need for vaccines, medical supplies, health clinics and hospitals. Discussions were also held regarding the need for solid infrastructure for local schools and the need for schooling materials. This is the main focus of the Mwamba Family Foundation, education and health.
Patrice and Hervé also met with member of FEC (Federation of Congolese Enterprises) and were in the company of Mr. Albert Yumi the CEO of FEC, Mr. Michel B. Losembe GM of Citigroup, and Mr. Henri Yav Mulang DA of FEC. FEC informed them that the DRC is moving towards the same situation as the starvation that has occured in Ethiopia. Since 1986 need for food has been on the rise. Keep in mind that the DRC has the capability to nourish more than 3 billion people but does not have the financing to create agriculture and commerce. There is an urgent need for foreign investment in agriculture and energy. Only 6% of Congolose have access to electricity. Members of FEC stated that the State of Congo has many hydroelectric projects available for investment. The DRC is facing starvation in 3 to 5 years. Time is of the essence!
Most of the population live under conditions that are of the upmost misery. They are forced to share the rituals of daily life with very unhealthy habitat which are carrying many diseases.
Water Provisions and the Lack Thereof.
Congo has one of the worlds largest soft water reserves, but because of the lack of aqueducts, Regideso (water National company) has an urgent need for overseas investments because the major part of the population must draw their water from the filth infested Congo River.
Young children must walk an average 30 kilometers to draw water from the polluted Congo River. From other areas families draw water from old pipes of a hospital which generally contains contaminated rainwater.
The Drain Problem in Congo.
After rain in Kinshasa the streets become flooded causing the locals to walk in water for several days at a time. The conditions of the roads in Kinshasa and throughout the Congo is deplorable causing transportation whether vehicular or by foot very treachorous.
This the condition of the streets each time that it rains.
The drains in the city of Kinshasa date back decades ago. There have been no improvement made since then causing flooding each time that is rains. During the rainy season the streets in Kinshasa become like a river.
The Lack of Infrastructure.
Patrice and Hervé visit an abandoned hospital in Kinshasa. It was constructed during the time of former president Mobutu, and could accomodate 3,000 beds. Construction remains unfinished due to lack of means.
Patrice and Hervé note the situation of other unfinished structures throughout Kinshasa.
The Dire Situation of Local Schools.
Patrice viewed a school in the local district of Ngombe.
The schools infrastructures is completely depleted. The condition is more that insufficient and sometimes non-existent.
Due to lack of infrastructure the students have class outdoors. Children are piled up there. There are over 1 million people in the Malueka Zone of Bandal inKinshasa. The children are often malnourished and must walk an average of 6 kilometers a day to go to school.
A single copy machine stands alone in a school house. This is about to the extent of this particular school's current technology. They are in dire need of school supplies such as copy machines and computers.
The Disadvantaged District of Ngiri Ngiri.
Children in the disadvantaged district of Ngiri Ngiri in Kinshasa live in old abandoned hospitals and houses.
There is no means of hygiene within their grasp and they live in deplorable conditions.
Patrice visited an abandoned park which was the former site of a sporting center. The Mwamba Family Foundation is working with local officials to help revitalize these centers for the children.
